A useful brief starts with normal use
For a van or motorhome, explain the usual load, journey pattern and transmission. For a towing vehicle, include how often it tows and the configuration used. For a performance car, describe the fitted hardware and the response you want to improve.

Record hardware and servicing changes
Send the engine, gearbox, registration and drivetrain, followed by any turbo, intercooler, intake or fuelling changes. Give the part specification where possible. Mention recent repairs, servicing and any earlier calibration rather than assuming the vehicle is standard.
Tell us about clutch slip, warning lights or inconsistent boost. A work vehicle with an existing fault needs that issue considered before discussing additional output.
Discuss delivery and condition together
For loaded use, describe the part of normal driving that needs attention: changing down frequently, inconsistent response or a particular transmission behaviour. A maximum power figure does not describe all of those requirements.
We can discuss engine calibration and supported transmission work together. Hardware condition and the operating brief influence what work is suitable.
Agree how the result will be assessed
Ask whether the proposed appointment covers calibration, diagnostics or a separate rolling-road session. Explain what information you need from testing so its scope can be agreed. Drivetrain support and preparation should be confirmed for the exact vehicle.
